About 200 health workers who were employed on contract by the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) say are living tough life because the Association is not paying them their gratuities.

Representative of the workers, MacDonald Shema, says one of the conditions in their contract states that they were entitled to gratuity amounting to about K15 million upon expiry of the contract.

“We were working contract with CHAM with funding from the Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). When we were signing the contract, we agreed that upon completion of the contract we will be receiving a gratuity which is according to Section 2.12 of our contract but up to date, we haven’t received our gratuities. They are just giving us false assurance,” he said.

Shema said life is unbearable due to of CHAM’s failure to conform to the agreement.

“When we finished the contract, we are not working any more. We were supposed to be using this gratuity for our basic needs such as rentals and many others,” Shema said.

Another worker told Zodiak Online that “last year they assured us that we will receive our money but to our surprise, only those who resigned and were recruited in government got their gratuity,” he said.

CHAM Executive Director, Innocencia Chirombo, was, however, reluctant to comment on the issue before meeting the disgruntled staff.
