The Malawi Environmental Health Association (MEHA) has asked government to come up with a policy to guide the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the wake of corona virus.

MEHA President, Elias Chimulambe, says the policy will protect lives of Malawians and health workers who are on the fore front providing medical care this time of corona pandemic.

He says they have noted with a concern an influx of the equipment which he says most of them do not adhere to the World Health Organization (WHO) standards.

Chimulambe says the equipment, “specifically the sanitizers, disinfectant water for hand washing and masks without adhering to WHO standards on PPE requirements” are the ones flooding the country.

“Some of the sanitizers and masks and ready prepared disinfectant water for hand washing may cause adverse public health problems,” he said.

He says health workers should routinely assess the risk of exposure to the Corona virus at their facility and the areas in the facility where exposure would occur.

“Evidence to date shows that the virus is transmitted by droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets fall to the ground or onto a surface within approximately one meter from the individual infected,” he said.

Spokesperson for the ministry of health, Joshua Malango, has asked for more time before responding to the matter.
