A group of unknown people in Blantyre on Tuesday embarked on a roving campaign destroying registration tools at the voter registration centers.

Among the centers are Makata Primary School and Blantyre Secondary School.

Eye witnesses at Makata Primary School Center told Zodiak Online that the people arrived at the center pretending to register before executing their mission.

“They were not in masks and they were many that we could not count them. One of them produced a pistol to scare officers who are conducting the registration exercise. They said there is Corona virus and nobody will vote. After damaging the equipment, all of them run away,” said the eye witness.

At Blantyre Secondary School, registration officers said that the people “arrived pretending to register. When we told them to wash their hands before entering the room, only one of them complied.

“One of them produced a stone from his pocket and smashed the computer. After that, all of them run away.

“We tried to run after them but one of them produced a knife, attempting to stab one of us. We just gave up for the sake of our lives,” said one of the officers.

Meanwhile, police have arrested a man suspected to be connected to the matter.

Southern Region Police Publicist, Ramsy Mushani, says the suspect has been released on bail.

“He has been charged with malicious damaged,” he said.

Malawi Electoral Commission is yet to react to the matter.
