UTM has described the 21 day lockdown as election fever by the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).

The party's Secretary General, Patricia Kaliati, claims government has rushed with the law without putting measures to cushion its citizens from effects of the lockdown.

She says the strict measure is just a tact by the DPP to delay the presidential elections slated for July 2 this year.

She said this on Thursday in Mulanje when her party unveiled 64 people who said have defected from the DPP.

“If at all they have passion for the people, they would have looked at what to give the people. It only shows that this is election fever. They are shivering because of the fresh elections.

“Poverty level in Malawi is so high. Most of the people work hand to mouth. People will die because of hunger and not COVID-19,” she said.

DPP Spokesperson, Nicholas Dausi, says cannot comment on the matter as government spokesperson, Mark Botoman, pleads with people to understand the COVID-19 situation in Malawi.

Several quarters are showing discontent with the 21 day lockdown on argument that it will hit Malawians harder than the virus itself.

Malawi will on July 2nd hold fresh presidential elections following nullification of May 21, 2019 presidential polls.
