The University of Malawi (UNIMA) has effected a 21 day lockdown in an effort to protect its staff from the Corona virus.

Chairperson of the UNIMA Council, Reverend Dr. Billy Gama, says the decision follows recommendations from the University’s Committee on COVID-19.

“Some weeks ago we had a directive to close all schools including universities but we still had staff in the campus. Later on we also decided to lockdown.

“All these are just precautionary measures because the issue of Corona virus is real and we can’t be playing around with it. We need to protect all our staff,” said Dr. Gama.

Dr. Gama says essential service providers have been exempted from the lockdown.

“The staff will be working from their homes but only essential services we are requiring their services so they are in exemption.

“We recommended each and every college to tell us their essential service staff and will be working in shifts,” he said.

Malawi is now registering local transmission cases of the Corona virus which has already claimed two lives.
