Ministry of Education, Science and Technology says it will soon start distribution of learning modules to secondary school students in rural areas to ensure that learning is not compromised in the wake of covid-19 pandemic.

A couple of weeks ago, the ministry of education in partnership with two mobile network services provider, TNM and Airtel, launched online learning at no data cost, a development which some education  stakeholders said it would discriminate learners in rural areas.

Speaking to Zodiak Online Wednesday, spokesperson for the ministry of education, Chikondi Chimala, said distribution of printed learning modules to students living in rural areas is among many interventions the ministry is developing to ensure that learning is continuing while students are at home.

According to Chimala, the ministry realizes that some students are unable to access lessons through online hence the initiative.

“Students who have access to internet will be provided with tablets and some lessons will be offered on television and radio stations while those living in remotest areas will be given printed learning modules,” said Chimala.

He said some of the interventions of reaching students will be available within the next two weeks.

A form four student at Holy Family Mission Community Day Secondary School in Phalombe, Blessings Mwango, said since the launch of online learning two weeks ago, he is unable to access lessons due lack of smart phone.

Mwango has since appealed to the ministry to speed up all the necessary procedures to ensure that students living in remote areas are able to access lessons.
