MCP-UTM alliance running mate, State Vice President Saulos Chilima, today took his campaign to Mangochi district headquarters where he sold “tangible development for the people” as the take-home message for hundreds who gathered at St. Augustine III school grounds.

Chilima urged the people to vote into office MCP president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera promising that a Chakwera administration would create over a million jobs, cut on some import taxes, bring down the cost of fertilizers, put up a city in Mangochi, encourage national unity and also freedom of worship.

Chilima has since urged parliamentarians to ensure that a definite date is set for the fresh presidential election in Malawi as failure to do saw would spark issues of legitimacy of the care-taker president.

This counters the position of President Peter Mutharika, who, during his audio-visual state-of-the-nation address on Friday June 5, 2020 intimated that he would hang on since the laws of Malawi do not allow a vacancy in the office of the state president.

Chilima said Malawi is governed by laws and the laws of the land need to be respected and the current leadership should do just that.

He said for Malawi to make any meaningful movement forward, President Mutharika should be replaced by Chakwera as Mutharika has “cheated Malawians” for a longtime as suffering continues to rage.

“We should now fight that Malawi should be known for good things not violence, not corruption. The alliance will release four billion Kwacha for Mangochi out of K75bn allocated for soft loans in the administration of Dr. Chakwera,” said Chilima to a loud uproar.

The UTM president spoke against violence saying the practice would only make citizens poorer. His campaign team has twice been attacked in Phalombe and recently in Machinga, Liwonde by their opposition.

He said as a tourism district in Malawi, political violence in Mangochi would erode economic gains made as visitors would start shunning the destination because of reports of violence. Chilima has talked Tonse alliance supporters against revenging for the violence that the DPP and UDF are unleashing.

“The best revenge is to vote them out of office,” he said.

Earlier before Chilima, UTM Vice President, Michael Usi, warned alliance supporters against swarming public rallies and not turning up on voting day saying the goal of the campaign will only be when people vote on the day to be appointed in due course.

Peoples’ Party Secretary General, Ibrahim Matola, in his remarks challenged his fellow Muslims against mixing politics, Islam and the Yao tribe observing these were distinct and independent of each other and as such, he advised the gathering against politicians who want to confuse people by mixing the three.

“Wake up. Vote for the (Tonse) alliance because this government is not helping you,” he said.

Matola noted that Mangochi has one of the country’s highest school dropout rate because there are not adequate schools in the district.

UTM Secretary General, Patricia Kaliati, also condemned violence saying time for that is gone.

Perhaps the most emotional moment was when Chilima went down on his knees hoisting the Malawi flag thanking the people of Mangochi for maintaining peace in the four days he was there. The crowds left St. Augustine III School grounds humiliated by the humility of the number two citizen of Malawi.
