New electoral commissioners have been sworn at the high court in Blantyre on Tuesday at a ceremony where Chief Justice, Andrew Nyirenda, cautioned them on professionalism.

Justice Nyirenda urged the commissioners to always remember that their ultimate responsibility is to safeguard political will of the electorates and not specific individuals.

He told them to be able to control their personal zeal and embrace common good.

“Your loyalty is to the constitution, state and public interest and not specific individual. The constitution will remain your roadmap and electoral laws will be your working tools,” he said.

The Chief Justice said a threat to democracy is “a public officer without credibility and integrity.”

The new chairperson for the Commission, Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale, said that with the oath they have taken, he believes that the “people of Malawi will get to see that we are servants of the people and we would like to do what is good for this nation.

“This process is very vital to building the political and governance system of this nation and we will do that in a manner that the people of Malawi will respect the outcomes,” he said.

President Peter Mutharika appointed the new commissioners after expiry of the previous ones and resignation of former chairperson, Justice Dr. Jane Ansah.

The new commission has a huge task to administer the fresh presidential election slated for 23 June 10, 2020 and restore public trust following condemnation of the outgoing commission that it mismanaged last year’s tripartite elections.
