One of the farmers, Handson Mambulasa, told Zodiak Online on Thursday that most crops which farmers rely got wilt due to early departure of rains in some parts of the district.
Mambulasa said they want to venture into winter cropping to cushion effects of dry spell that hit some parts of the district.
“Crops such as maize, sorghum and sunflower got wilt due to early departure of rains in other areas, "said Mambulasa.
He said if the government and other players in the agriculture sector provide them with farm inputs they can venture into irrigation farming along the rivers to be food secure.
Mambulasa said a lot farmers who were affected by the disaster have capacity to do winter cropping but have no resources.
Meanwhile, Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture, Grey Nyandule Phiri, says the ministry has no plans to roll out such an initiative, citing lack of resources.
