Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) has received oxygen plant from the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Trust that will be producing 1 million liters of oxygen a day to patients at the facility amid COVID-19 pandemic.

Deputy Director of Clinical Research at Malawi – Liverpool Wellcome Trust, Professor Henry Mwandumba, said after handing over the machine on Friday that over 100 beds will be supplied with the oxygen.

“The plant is a phenomenal investment for Malawi. It will live beyond the COVID-19 time. If there is one treatment proven to save lives of patients with COVID-19, oxygen is it if you look at data coming from all countries across the world.

“Malawi is not a reach a country. Our health service is not affluent; so we had to say to ourselves that this disease is here and is going to affect a good number of our population. That is why we decided to contribute to save lives,” he said.

Local government minister, Dr. Ben Phiri, said gas is paramount in managing the pandemic as he pleaded with people to be more cautious in preventing further spread of the disease.

“COVID-19 has no cure other than the gas. Therefore, the coming in of this plant will really help us in moving towards the right direction and as government we are thankful for this initiative,” he said.
