Hell broke loose in Limbe in Blantyre on Wednesday when minibus touts engaged in a fight over leadership of Limbe depot.

Business came to a standstill as road became impassable following the fracas.

One of the touts told Zodiak Online that there is an agreement that leadership over the depot will change as governments change, saying it is now time for supporters of the new government to take over the mantle.

“When we were outside government, supporters of the Democratic Progressive Party were leading the depot and took lucrative position. Now that Malawi Congress Party has taken over government, it is our time to take over the positions,” he said.

The incumbent vice chairperson of the depot, Stanley Nkhoma, dismissed the claims, saying they have been running the depot during all the past regimes and nothing changes.

“A group of people claiming to be supporters of MCP and Tonse Alliance stormed the depot armed saying they want to take leadership of the depot. We tried to discuss with them but to no avail. They say that they are in government and they want to take over the leadership but that will not happen. Our dependents rely on this depot,” he said.

Southern Region Police Spokesperson, Ramsy Mushani, says they have launched investigation into the matter.

“The situation did not permit us to talk to the warring sides so we just focused on dispersing them to bring calm. We have not arrested anyone yet but we are investigating the matter,” he said.
