ESCOM Employees Down Tools Over Unpaid Salary Arrears
The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) employees are staging a sit in in Blantyre over unpaid salary arrears.
Concerned employees confided in Zodiak Online Tuesday they are demanding six months’ salary arrears from January to June this year.
“They promised to effect a 15 percent pay hike of which 10 percent was effected last year and the remaining 5 percent was supposed to be effected in January.
“So we have downed our tools to force management to pay our arrears,” explained a concerned employee who declined to be identified.
The employees were spotted chanting in Blantyre.
ESCOM staff Union Secretary General William Mnyamula asked for more time before speaking to the media on the matter.
There was no immediate comment also from ESCOM Spokesperson Innocent Chitosi.
