Chiefs and the youth in the Lower Shire have asked government to finish all major projects which were left by the former regime.

Senior Chief Malemia of Nsanje told Zodiak on Tuesday that he is expecting President Lazarus Chakwera administration to do the needful.

He cites the multi billion kwacha Shire Valley Transformation Program which he says once completed, will help to end perennial hunger in Chikwawa and Nsanje.

"I believe any government starts a project to uplift lives of people. I feel the SVTP is vital to us. We ask for its completion," said Senior Chief Malemia.

While agreeing with the senior chief on the irrigation program, the youth representative in Chikwawa John Alufandika also asked the new government to complete the road projects including Chikwawa - Chapananga, the East Bank road and Nsanje Marka road.

When contacted, ministry of agriculture spokesperson Priscilla Mateyu, assured the people that the Shire Valley Transformation Project will not be abandoned.

She said SVTP is on course with 6% of work done since its launch on 11th March 2020.

SVTP is largely financed by World Bank and African Development Bank.

About $225 million is going to be utilized in the first phase of the project.
