MEC to Review Funding Situations
Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale, says they will discuss with other stakeholders on management of future funding situations.
Dr. Kachale says there are jurisdictions where resources are protected from being controlled or used to undermine independence of the Commission.
The Commission was on Thursday reviewing the 2020 Fresh Presidential Elections in Blantyre.
“That one is more radical reform issue. I think we will require the involvement of all other stakeholders. I think this meeting will provide opportunity for us as a Commission to reflect on that.
“I am sure also that other interested parties would like to have a say on how the funding situation can be managed.
“We have jurisdictions where the resources of the Commission are guaranteed the different modalities on ensuring that when the activities of MEC are budgeted, the resources are not controlled or used to undermine the independence of the institution,” he said.
Funding woes created uncertainty over holding of the Fresh Presidential Election last month as Treasury seemed reluctant to release the funds.
The Election was finally held with a K10 billion deficit on the polling day.
