In a letter dated 27th July, 2020 and signed by all 14 councilors in the district, the councilors said Dr. Matchaya was chased in Nkhotakota because of financial mismanagement and arrogance and sending him to Thyolo is unfair to people of Thyolo.

Council Chairperson Councilor Sandram Maulana said the councilors have written the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Government to reverse its decision.

“It’s like transferring a problem from one place to another but we assure the Ministry that will welcome any DC here in Thyolo except Dr. Matchaya,” said Councilor Maulana.

But the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Muhlabase Mughogho while confirming to us the transfer of Dr. Matchaya to Thyolo replacing Justin Kathumba who is heading to Neno said the ministry has not yet received the letter officially.

“The ministry cleared Dr. Matchaya of any wrong doing,” said Mughogho.

Another letter is circulating on social media reportedly written by chiefs and concerned citizens in Thyolo refusing to welcome Dr. Matchaya to Thyolo.
