A grouping under the banner friends of Balaka District Hospital has embarked on maintenance of the facility that was gutted down by fire three weeks ago.

One of the members, Reverend father Piergiorgio Gamba, says they have already raised 20 million kwacha from several well-wishers and are optimistic that they will finish the renovations by this month end.

"We have already fixed water problem and soon we will be done with electricity having already spent about 10 million kwacha," said Fr. Gamba.

Patrick Bwanali the interim chairperson for the group says other pioneers behind the initiative include musician cum politician Lucius Banda, Member of Parliament for Balaka West and the hospital administrator, MacArthur Makata, just to mention some.

"We feel we can do something to complement government efforts to ensure the hospital is operational soon," says Bwanali.

The hospital’s spokesperson, Mercy Nyirenda, commended the group for the initiative.

"We are thankful that water is already running and electricity maintenance is almost through.

"They have also promised to rehabilitate the kitchen and laundry that were completely gutted down," says Nyirenda.

The hospital has a catchment population of about 50, 000.
