Child Victims of Witchcraft Seek Police Protection

Amid increasing witchcraft related attacks on children and grannies in Mulanje district, on Thursday police in the district had nine minors aged between 8 and 14 at its victim support unit who escaped from mob justice.

Mulanje Police Officer-In-Charge Assistant Commissioner Edwin Magalasi told us five came from Duswa village where the witchcraft related violence happened last week and four came on Tuesday this week from Ngolowera where they were accused of bewitching a certain woman there.

“The rescued grannies, one died on Tuesday while receiving treatment at Mulanje district hospital, three are still admitted at the hospital, one is seeking refuge at the VSU while one was taken home on Wednesday by her relations,” said Magalasi.

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner Magalasi says police have arrested some people suspected to have been behind these attacks as investigations continue.

“We in collaboration with chiefs are planning to conduct mass sensitization meetings on violence against the elderly and children whom they suspect of practicing witchcraft,” said the OC.

Early this week, District Social Welfare Assistant Noel Chambo sounded an SOS to well-wishers to assist the children who are at the victim support unit with food and cloths.

“The situation in which these children are in is very pathetic, so it is my plea to well-wishers to assist them,” said Chambo.
