High court sitting in Zomba has today [Friday] convicted Misozi Chanthunya of murdering his girlfriend, Linda Gasa, a decade ago.

Judge Ruth Chinangwa ha also convicted Chanthunya on two other offenses; perjury and hindering burial of a dead body.

Following the conviction, Chinangwa has revoked bail of the convict.

State has prayed with the court for life sentence for murder.

The court will pass the sentence on Wednesday, September 2, 2020.

Michael Goba Chipeta, lawyer for Chanthunya, says the judgment is based on circumstantial evidence and has a lot of irregularities.

“The only risk that one takes is the chance of making a lot of errors which has been the case now. There are a lot of errors and I have been given instructions to take the matter to Supreme Court of Appeal after sentencing next week,” he said.

On the bail revocation, Chipeta says “that’s normal because it is within the jurisdiction of court.

“As a human being, the law is very clear. He is entitled to bail pending appeal as long as he proves certain circumstances. We are going to consider making that application next week as soon as we get the sentence.”

Chanthunya fled the country to South Africa after it was discovered that her Zimbabwean girlfriend, Gasa, who was studying at Malawi College of Accountancy, went missing in 2010.

It was heard that Gasa was discussing pregnancy issue with the convict at his cottage in Mangochi at the time of her fate.

Her body was later found buried in a bathroom of the cottage.

Chanthunya had been at large before arrested by police in South Africa and was extradited back to Malawi to be tried.
