University of Malawi (UNIMA) 2019 graduands have rejected the University’s idea to hold a virtual graduation in the wake of COVID-19.

UNIMA Students Union (UMSU) President, Scalioth Chithokonya, says the University can use a phased approach to hold a physical graduation in observance of COVID19 preventive measures.

He says graduation is a once in a lifetime prestigious event that they cannot afford to have it online.

“UMSU appreciates that we are treading on foreign waters. Therefore, with respect to the COVID-19 guidelines, UMSU proposes a phased approach to the graduation.

“The programme can be set to allow a specific number of people per time to avoid congestion and also the use of different venues such as multipurpose halls and stadiums to help dividing the congregation and minimize congestion,” he said

Registrar of the University, Dr. Wokomaatani Malunga, says is yet to get the communication from the Union.

According to the University’s communication, senate resolved that a virtual graduation be held under the current COVI-19 circumstances.
