The initiative is being implemented with support from Shire Valley Transformation program.

Minister of Lands Kezzie Msukwa told journalists in Chikwawa that this will bar foreigners and some greedy influential people from monopolizing land ownership.

Msukwa believes this will empower women and other vulnerable people whose land is always exposed to grabbing.

"The most pleasing thing is that certificates being offered to landholders do not have an expiry date. Even if the parents are dead, children will be free to own the land, so we hope this will protect poor people' land," said Msukwa who was accompanied by his Deputy Abida Mia.

The two, visited Katunga area to appreciate how the landholder ownership exercise is progressing.

Minister Msukwa then commended the Shire Valley Transformation Program for scaling up the land registration in order to safeguard the land of poor communities.

Traditional Authority Katunga thinks the initiative will curb land disputes.

"Certainly, this initiative will curb land conflicts. No one will have power to impound the land of the other," said TA Katunga.

Shire Valley Transformation Program is expected to spend $235 million United States Dollars to construct a 52 kilometers canal that will irrigate 43,370 hectares in the upper part of Chikwawa and Nsanje.
