Machinga District Council has commended Action Aid Malawi for its support towards improving rural financial access through empowering Village Savings and Loans (VSL) groups.

Acting Community Development Officer for the Council, Gilbert Kachinjika, says Action Aid has trained 15 village agents to train more VSL groups in traditional authorities Nyambi, Ngokwe and Ntumbwinda in the district.

"This is commendable as the village agents are also given bicycles to ease mobility whilst training the VSL groups for efficiency," said Kachinjika.

Action Aid Field Facilitator for Machinga, Gift Chifwamba, says this has been possible through Tilimbike Project which Action Aid is implementing in Machinga and Dedza districts with support from Financial Access to Rural Markets and Small Enterprises (FARMSE).

Chifwamba says 15 village agents have been identified and trained in VSL methodology to train more VSL groups.

He said: "We are targeting poor households vulnerable to poverty with about 37, 500 people equivalent to about 1500 VSL groups."

Simiyati Lyson is one of the village agents who is geared to train more than 15 VSL groups.

"The bicycles and the training received from Action Aid will help me and my fellow village agents to assist more VSL groups become profitable and sustainable," said Lyson.

Action Aid is also implementing the project in traditional authorities Kaphuka and Kasumbu in Dedza district for three years.
