Mangochi Commended on COVID-19 Management

Members of the Presidential taskforce on Covid-19 has commended Mangochi district and municipal councils for what they are doing to fight the pandemic.

Minister of Education Agnes Nyalonje, Minister of Labour Ken Kandodo, and leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa, expressed their satisfaction Wednesday after visiting the district to appreciate what the two councils are doing on covid-19.

The team which is visiting the eastern region said is impressed as despite the fact that Mangochi is one of the districts deemed risky for bordering with Mozambique and that most of its residents frequently travels to countries with high numbers of Covid-19 cases the district has managed the scare.

“The biggest challenge that concerns us as task force is that the general population believes that the problem is now over and we can now stop taking preventing measures, that is one of the reasons that we are here to tell people that the problem is still around,” said Nyalonje.

Nankhumwa also said is impressed that even in the market where the team visited it was clean which he said is not a situation in other districts.

“The hygiene in the market has impressed me, I have been the minister of local government myself and I know exactly what am saying, if this is not just for today,” said Nankhumwa.

Mangochi district Council Chairperson Allan Sam M’madi, said the coming of the Presidential taskforce on Covid-19 team is an encouragement to the district team.

The team visited DMI University, the districts central market and meeting officials for the two councils where they discussed a number of things.

Currently, Mangochi has tested 536 people and registered 156 cases of which 3 are still active, 151 recoveries and 2 deaths.

According to the district hospital out of the 156 positive cases, 113 are imported wile 43 are local transmissions.
