Fashion for Change Global has dressed Chilaweni hill in Blantyre in an effort to ease effects of climate change hitting the city.

Spokesperson for the fashion and environment advocates, Kelvin Kazako, says besides conserving the environment, it is also their desire to bring back the lost glory of nature.

“We only hear stories of what nature was like. We want to bring back that. We hear that good rainfall relies on trees as well. We want to bring that back,” he said.

Kazako said they have planted 2, 000 trees; 1, 500 indigenous trees and 500 fruit trees.

“These fruit trees will also help to boost nutrition for the communities surrounding the hill. We will be working with the communities to ensure survival of these trees,” he said.

Blantyre District Council Directors of Health and Social Services, Dr. Emmanuel Kanjunju, says trees in the district have been cut down wantonly for charcoal and firewood.

“This initiative by the young people is a step ahead in conserving the environment. The district has been facing harsh effects of climate triggered by cutting down of trees among others.

“What these young people have done will help to deal with that,” he said.

Blantyre has recently been hit by floods which have been connected to environmental degradation.
