Mulanje Chiefs Faulted on Deforestation

Senior Chief Chikumbu of Mulanje district has faulted some chiefs especially village heads for continued deforestation in local forests, rivers and graveyards.

The senior chief who recently fired one of her village heads for cutting down 35 trees at a grave yard for his timber business told Zodiak Online that time has come for chiefs to lead in conserving and not destroying trees.

“As we are in tree planting season now, I urge all chiefs in the district to lead in planting and conserving trees and not destroying trees,” said Senior Chief Chikumbu.

Parliamentarian for Mulanje South East Constituency, Naomi Kilekwa, Phiri whose constituency has been faulted for massive deforestation said the area experiences flush floods and strong winds year in year out.

“I therefore call upon her constituents to plant as many trees as possible in all designated places including their homesteads,” said Kilekwa Phiri.

Assistant District Forest Officer for Mulanje David Bello told said that Village Natural Resources and Management Committees (VNRMCs) are leading tree planting exercises in all constituencies.

Very few people are attending all afforestation activities as a preventive measure to COVID-19.

District Forestry Office in partnership with Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust (MMCT) and Cedar Energy have been supporting this year’s district forestry season.
