Sotto Sopra Malawi has supported Thyolo District Hospital with five oxygen cylinders, days after Zodiak Online reported about the challenges choking the facility in the fight against COVID-19.

Team leader for the organization, Witt Matabwa, says the support is responding to the SOS that the hospital sent while valuing the support the organization gets from communities in the district.

“As an organization, we work with people. We need these people to be in good health. If one of the community members is sick, we cannot work with them. We need them to be healthy to contribute effectively,” he said.

Director of Health and Social Services for the district, Dr. Anold Jumbe, says the support is a life-saver.

“We have received five cylinders and connectors. Most of COVID-19 patients need oxygen. These cylinders will support our patients to be supplied with oxygen. However, we still need more support as we are registering more cases,” he said.

Dr. Jumbe, however, expressed concern over misconceptions that people have over COVID-19, saying it is risking more lives than the pandemic itself.

“There are more fake news making rounds on social media about COVID-19. This is preventing more people from seeking medical help at the hospital. As a result, they report late at the hospital at the most critical stage. We need to join hands as a nation to address this,” he said.

The hospital has since extended bed capacity of its emergency treatment unit from five to ten.
