Health experts have attributed a drop in COVID-19 positive cases and deaths that the country is witnessing to, among other factors, strict observance of preventive measures.

President of Society of Medical Doctors, Dr. Victor Mithi and health rights activist, Maziko Matemba, have, however, warned people not to relax in managing the pandemic as it may hit hard again.

Dr. Mithi added that “on top of that, another theory could be that we are now at the slope of the wave. We have reached the peak of the wave and we are now at the slope of it.

“Most of the pandemics come in form of a wave and a wave has a peak and has a slope. This is what we are observing right now; let’s keep fingers crossed; let us keep on observing the preventive measures and see where they will take us to.”

According to Matemba, the virus could be mutating; hence, the drop.

“The virus itself, sometimes, changes the way it behaves after some time. So, it might be that it is trying to change to a different form and with that change, it has failed to infect more people like the virus which we had in January.

“This doesn’t mean that the virus is gone. It just wants to find a way on how it can mutate itself. We need to keep observing the recommended preventive measures,” he said.

The country has since last month witnessed a drop in COVID-19 cases and deaths.
