Adult literacy instructors have taken a swipe at government over the delay to disburse the honoraria arrears.

One of the instructors in Phalombe, Handson Mambulasa, told Zodiak Online on Tuesday that they are living a miserable life since they rely on the honoraria for survival.

Mambulasa says the honoraria arrears date back from September, 2018 to August 2019.

"Officials from ministry conducted head count in August and October 2020 to ascertain the number of instructors to be given the arrears," said Mambulasa.

He added that they have been asking authorities to pay them but to no avail.

However, Deputy Director for Community Development responsible for Adult Literacy, Charles Nkunga, says the ministry is waiting for the treasury department to give them money so that they should square the arrears.

Nkunga says following the verification exercise which was conducted in 2020, the treasury department is expected to release K3.4 billion for 8, 950 adult literacy instructors across the country.

In 2018, the government adjusted upwards honoraria for the adult literacy instructors from K1, 000. 00 to K15, 000. 00 per month.
