Police in Mangochi have launched a manhunt for a hit and run driver who allegedly killed a cyclist and injured another on Monday night, at Nyambi, along the Bakili Muluzi highway.

Mangochi Police Station Deputy Spokesperson, Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, said the unknown driver of the Toyota Mark 11 saloon, registration number SA 4832 was cruising from the direction of Namwera heading Mangochi Boma.

“Upon arrival at the said place, he lost control of the motor vehicle and failed to negotiate a curve due to over speeding, went to the extreme offside of the road where he hit two pedal cyclists who were cycling from the opposite direction,” explained Tepani Daudi, who identified the dead as 26-year-old Edward Malefula from Nsangala village Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba district.

She said following the impact, Malefula sustained severe spine injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Majuni Health Centre, while the other victim sustained multiple cut wounds on both legs and arms and is being treated at the same hospital.

“The driver abandoned the motor vehicle, fled the scene without rendering any assistance to the victims,” said Tepani Daudi.
