Over the weekend, representatives of District and Area Civil Protection Committees in Mulanje had interaction sessions with their counterparts in Mangochi.

In one of their sessions, Relief and Rehabilitation Officer at Mangochi District Council Francis Kadzokoya said the district has a month ago opened a new evacuation centre at T/A Chimwala and has another centre at T/A Mponda.

“Heavy and stormy rains, floods, dry spells and lately COVID-19 are notable disasters that haunt the district and we work together with different partners in managing these disasters,” said Kadzokoya.

Kadzokoya who said both structures have capacities of 300 people said their wish is to have an evacuation center in every T/A.

Director of Planning and Development at Mulanje District Council Ernest Kaphuka said construction of permanent evacuation centers is the good lesson learnt during the exchange visit.

“Having such structures will help ease panic faced during relocation of disasters displaced people,” said Kaphuka who also chairs the DCPC in Mulanje.

Chairpersons of Chikumbu, Njema, Mabuka and Tombodiya ACPCs in Mulanje also had an interaction with Jalasi ACPC.

During the visit Jalasi ACPC Chairperson Yusuf Makiyi told the visiting team that the ACPC has its own contingency plan which guides them in disaster prevention, response, mitigation and recovery.

“We developed this plan in 2020 after collecting plans from VCPCs and we shared this plan with different partners implementing their projects in this area for support and it is working,” said Makiyi.

The learning visit was facilitated by Care Malawi International and Trocaire through CADECOM who are implementing a European Union funded ECHO-COVID-19 project in Mulanje and Mangochi respectively.
