A 38-year-old man is in police custody at Monkey-bay police station in Mangochi for allegedly killing his friend following a fight that started after disagreements over a piece of cigarettes.

Eastern Region Police Assistant Spokesperson, Sergeant Tionge Kayenda, who has identified the suspect as Jackson Zeleson, told Zodiak that the incident happened Saturday, 24 April 2021, at Malembo Trading Centre where the two were drinking beer together.

“Before the fight, Zeleson and the deceased, 35-year-old Samson Isaac Ndeule, were enjoying their drinks. The deceased asked the suspect to share a cigarette of which he refused, and a quarrel erupted between them, resulting in a fight, but some people at the bar stopped it,” explained Kayenda.

She said this did not please the suspect who later followed his friend to his house where they started fighting again and in the course the suspect pushed Ndeule, who fell down, fainted and rushed to Malembo Health Centre where he was pronounced dead.

According to Kayenda, late Ndeule was from Yesaya Village, Traditional Authority Nankumba in the district while, Zeleson hails from Zalengera Village, Traditional Authority Ganya in Ntcheu District.
