Education activist has asked President Lazarus Chakwera to announce the appointment of councils for the new universities after delinking them from the University of Malawi, UNIMA.

Activist Limbani Nsapato says the new universities are at standstill due to lack of the councils for they are high-ranking decision-making structures.

“We feel president Lazarus Chakwera should urgently appoint councils for the universities that were delinked from UNIMA to start their work,” said he.

State house press secretary Brian Banda promised to come back to us on the matter.

Government resolved to delink the Polytechnic, Kamuzu College of Nursing and College of Medicine from UNIMA to, among other things, increase access to higher education and improve governance and operational efficiency in public universities in the country.

In 2019, parliament approved the delinking of UNIMA into three universities; namely the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, and the University of Malawi.
