Ministry Urges Private Sector to Establish More Hospitals

The Ministry of Health has asked the private sector to invest more in establishing private hospitals in order to achieve universal health coverage.

Speaking during commissioning of Atlas Medical Center in Blantyre on Tuesday afternoon, the Ministry’s Chief of Health Services, Dr Queen Dube, said it pathetic that out of 9, 498 hospitals in the country, only 121 are owned by the private sector while the rest belong to government and religious institutions.

“I therefore ask a few privileged people to actively participate in the provision of quality, equity and affordable health services to citizens in the country,” said Dr Dube

She then called on the private sector to do the needful in order to help government to achieve the universal health coverage and 2063 agenda.

“There is need to fulfil government to have health facilities for primary health cares every five kilometers,” she explained.

Managing Director of Atlas Medical Centre, Dr Parth Patel, assured that the facility will stick to standards by making sure that residents are accessing safe and quality health services.

“We will strive to work in the best interest of citizens by making sure that all services including the diagnostic laboratory, pediatric and general surgeries,” said Dr Patel.

Deputy mayor for Blantyre City Joseph Makwinja has urged the new hospital to offer affordable services to enable most of the low-income residents to access the services.
