The National Water Resources Authority says water levels in Lake Malawi have this year hit 475 metres high above the sea level, a highest record in the past 8 years.

According to Oswald Mwamsamali, Acting Executive Director for the authority, close to a decade the lake water level has been less than what they have registered this year.

Mwamsamali, who was speaking on Monday at Liwonde when minister of Forestry and Natural Resources, Nancy Tembo, visited Kamuzu barrage on Shire River, attributed the development of good rains the country has received and the new barrage.

“We have seen the highest levels in 8 years, the gains made this year are more than what we have been registering in the past years, as they were below 475 registered this year,” said Mwamsamali.

Commenting on the development, Tembo, said with such a good development, the country should enhance the management of the environment, mainly in the catchment areas of the rivers that flows into shire river and Lake Malawi.

“The National Water Resources Authority is happy with the gains in our lake, but I think what we need to be doing all of us is to manage our environment, make sure we do not cut trees around river banks and make sure we have our rivers flowing into the lake,” said Tembo.

The minister has also called on entrepreneurs who want to invest in making briquettes to use the available resources at the barrage where they remove qàtons of hyacinth weeds every day.

“These are available law materials that if one can invest, will only put the resources in the machines and get these hyacinths that are just dumped,” explained the minister.
