Eight shops have been closed in Blantyre and Limbe by Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) for non-issuance of Electronic Fiscal Device (EFD) receipts.

MRA Head of Corporate Affairs, Steve Kapoloma, told Zodiak on Tuesday that the law will continue to take its course.

“All businesses that were penalized for no issuance of EFD receipts and have not paid their due tax will be closed.

“We are reminding all VAT registered traders that under Section 46 of the VAT Act, failure to issue an EFD receipt attracts a minimum penalty of K500, 000,” said Kapoloma.

On Tuesday, MRA sealed two Limbe based VAT registered operators, Wang Trading and Olympic Bakery.

The Kuiphula Lisiti Langa campaign is aimed at encouraging VAT registered traders to issue EFD receipts all the time.

The campaign disbursed K25.9 million in cash rewards with a total of 1, 094 reported cases and a total 347.6 million kwacha in revenue collected.
