The Blantyre District Council has trained the District Elections Supervisory Team (DEST) for administration of a credible June 29th Local Government By-Elections at Chikwembere Ward in the district.

The district’s commissioner, Bennett Nkasala, says the Team has been trained in areas such as polling and results management to achieve the elections that will be accepted by all.

“The meeting that has been organized today [Thursday] is to equip DEST members with knowledge to manage electoral process so that by the end of the exercise, everyone is on top of the game so that we have a by-election conducted by professionals,” he said.

The Ward Returning Officer, Franklyn Malunga, says they are upbeat to conduct the free and fair elections.

“Preparations are now over. Registration, verification and nomination papers presentation are done. Candidates are now campaigning.

“This training is important to us because we will be equipped with skills on how to handle the elections especially on the procedures and the results management as well,” said Malunga.

The ward will be having the by-elections following death of the former councilor who died in a road accident.
