Royalty College Principal, Margaret Mphwiyo, says 25 students are already on the program since the initiative rolled out January 2021.

"These met the requirements upon assessment of their essays like how needy their homes are, aged below 25 and possession of a Malawi School Certificate of Education among others," said Mphwiyo.

She says they came to Liwonde after noting that illiteracy levels were higher and there was no private college to offer quality education to students who failed to make it to public universities and other expensive private tertiary institutions.

According to Mphwiyo, the offer for the partial scholarship is for all Malawians who can be proven to be from low-income earners.

One of the beneficiaries under the scholarship, Edrina Luhanga, from Rumphi district who enrolled for a Diploma in Human Resource Management course, says this is a ladder to achieving her goals.

Edrina, a first born in a family of three, says her parents who are small scale farmers failed to send her to several tertiary institutions due to resource constraints.

"I almost lost hope of attaining tertiary education until I heard of this scholarship from a friend, and am determined to bail out my family from poverty one day," said Edrina.

The college which opened doors in 2019, offers several management, development and social work courses among others.
