Education authorities in Blantyre say enhancement of climate change and environmental sustainability interventions can assist learning institutions to mitigate climate change issues in the country.

District Education Manager for Blantyre Urban, Anita Kaliu says learners have to be encouraged to plant trees and use of alternative fuel in order to reduce effects of climate change.

“We are targeting primary school learners because they are beneficiaries, but most of all, they are the ones that can help much in the implementation and sustainability of the project as they can quickly grasp what they learn in class,” Kaliu explained.

She then called on teachers and parents to motivate children to develop a culture of conserving natural resources including promotion of natural generation.

A Standard 7 learner at Chilomoni L.E.A School, Grace Mhango, says more need to be done to sustain trees that they plant each and every year in order to preserve the environment.

“Sustaining and preserving the environment is very important because it helps to control climate change in the country because our climate is warmer than other countries,” Mhango said.

Meanwhile, education authorities in Blantyre have launched training on climate change environmental sustainability targeting primary school learners in Blantyre.
