The Young Women Christian Association of Malawi (YWCAM) has trained girls from Bangwe in Blantyre on COVID19.

YWCAM Programs Manager, Tisungane Mtonga, says they are involving the young girls in their interventions as one of the vulnerable groups affected by the pandemic.

“What we want to do is to empower young women to take a role in sensitizing their community members to still adhere to COVID-19 prevention measures. We also want them to know more about COVID19 vaccines to have more communities vaccinated.

“The youth were very affected when schools were closed down for a long time. We also saw drastic increase in teenage pregnancies and child marriages.

“Financially, most of their parents lost jobs, their businesses were slowed down and some of them were stopped completely,” he said.

The Blantyre District Health Office Health Youth Friendly Health Service Coordinator, Maness Segula, the trainer, urged the youth to patronize COVID-19 vaccination exercise.

She expressed dissatisfaction with low vaccine uptake by the youth in the district.

Segula suspects misconceptions surrounding the vaccine and the pandemic as a leading factor for this.

“The youth forms larger part of the population and they need to get vaccinated,” she said.
