Two prominent civil society organizations (CSOs) have criticized the police and office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for delaying to prosecute suspects who brutally killed people based on witchcraft accusations.

Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation, (CHRR), Executive Director Micheal Kaiyatsa and Centre for development of People, (CEDEP), Director Gift Trapence are dismayed that this situation is developing a culture of impunity in the country.

Kaiyatsa has since asked the two departments to expedite the cases.

“We are concerned and frustrated with continued lack transparency of accountability for attacks on people accused of witchcraft,” said Kaiyatsa

Trapence has since asked the office director of public prosecution to increase speed on the matter.

“We have a lot of cases that we have documented and that we know that it is the office of the DPP which is delaying to take those matters to court. We ask this office increase speed to complete the cases,” said Trapence.

Director of Public Prosecution Dr Steve Kayuni has promised progress on all homicide related cases.

We have heard their concerns and we will work on them. Currently, the officials are working very hard to have all these cases completed,” explained Dr Kayuni.

There was no immediate reaction from police on the matter.

In the last two year alone, CHRR and CEDEP documented 60 killings based on witchcraft accusations, and none has been prosecuted.
