Two well-known education organizations, LEAP Africa and Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) say consistent enhancement of mentorship program in Malawi can assist learners to acquire transformative leadership skills and become productive citizens.

LEAP Africa Executive Director, Femi Taiwo, and CAMFED Acting National Director, Robert Chioza, told Zodiak on Friday evening in Blantyre after celebrating a two-year female teacher mentors transformative leadership program that there is a need to create more opportunities for vulnerable girls to complete their education.

Chioza says his organization will continue to provide bursaries to needy learners and conduct academic clinics in order to motivate girls to compete well with boys in class.

“Girls continue to face various challenges including harmful cultural practices and long distances to school. As CAMFED, we will continue to support needy girls to complete their studies,” said Chioza.

Taiwo said his organization recognizes that youth leadership and inclusion is critical to nation-building and wealth creation.

“As an organization, we are committed to raise leaders that will transform Africa through interventions for young people that bridge the gap in leadership, education, employability and entrepreneurship,” said Taiwo.

The two were speaking when LEAP Africa, CAMFED and Mastercard Foundation were celebrating that 105 female teacher mentors drawn from 20 districts had completed a two-year transformative leadership program.

Guest speaker who is acting director for Malawi National Examinations Board Professor, Dorothy Nampota, Deputy Director for secondary education Samuel Chibwana and a female teacher mentor from Nyamadzere Community Day Secondary School in Nsanje, Mwawi Thete, have asked for mindset change among parents and community leaders to value and encourage the girl child to remain in school.

The Transformative Leadership Program (TLP) is an initiative of LEAP Africa funded by the Mastercard Foundation designed to equip Teacher Mentors with the knowledge, confidence and skills required to model leadership and effectively support the leadership development of their scholars.
