Tourism minister Michael Usi and musician Lawi who is also Mulanje Mountain Ambassador on Friday led over 70 hikers to Mulanje mountain and the team reached Sapitwa, the Mountain’s highest peak on Saturday on a tour dubbed “amplifying the voice of the Mountain.

After spending about 60 hours in the mountain, the team trekked down on Sunday, very exhausted yes but they were all smiling for reaching Sapitwa.

Usi told Zodiak Online that Mulanje Mountain has different beautiful features and if promoted the mountain can attract more foreign tourists who will be bringing the much-needed forex into the country.

“I knew Mulanje mountain as one of the tourists’ attraction sites but I did not know the beautiful places I have seen this weekend after hiking alone up to Sapitwa. Very wonderful sites,” said Usi.

He believes the hiking has sent a message to the country and the whole world about the beauty of the mountain.

Lawi said as the mountain’s ambassador, he took up the challenge to hike up to Sapitwa to appreciate himself the beauty of the mountain.

“I have a challenging task to come up with musical projects that will be selling the mountain within and beyond,” said Lawi.

One of the event’s organizers, Mervis Maigwa, said this was just the launch of the hiking event but there is hope the Lawi hiking will be an annual event.

“We are overwhelmed with the support we have received today and we will be happier if the corporate world and individuals continue participating in conserving the mountain’s environment,” said Maigwa.

Lawi and Agoroso entertained the hikers who included District Commissioner for Mulanje Stallichi Mwambiwa at Sapitwa and Chisepo hut where the hikers spent two nights.

Yes, the hiking was tough, passing through dangerous caves and rough rocks but the hikers had one brief message; let us join hands in promoting Mulanje mountain as a tourists’ site.

The department of tourism, Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust, Malawi Gaming Board, Old Mutual, GIZ, Amaryllis Hotel, Malawi Airlines were some of the hiking event’s sponsors.
