WOLREC, OXFAM Train Police in GBV Fight

Despite Balaka district registering a seven percent decrease in gender-based violence over the past eight months, Women Legal Resource Center (WOLREC) and OXFAM say there is still a need to involve the police in addressing the same.

OXFAM Gender Program Officer for Balaka Salah Kambilinga says it is to this regard that they have offered financial support to see that police officers from all the five police units in Balaka have acquired training on how to provide services to the survivors of Gender Based violence (GBV).

"Our wish is to end GBV cases in the district and we are committed to support the police and work with them wherever necessary to win the fight against gender-based violence," said Kambilinga.

Balaka Police Station officer, Senior Superintendent Fabiano Thawiha commended the two organizations for supporting and involving the police to end gender-based violence.

"Though we have registered a seven percent decrease in gender-based violence between January and August this year as compared to same period last year, our involvement is key to ensure further reduction of GBV cases," said Thawiha.

He said top on the case list of gender-based violence, include physical and psychological abuses, extra marital affairs, failing to provide for children and wives, and economic related abuses.
