The organization’ Senior Coordination officer, Rosta Kufandiko told Zodiak on Friday that it is pathetic that rapid urbanization and poor planning are fueling disasters.
“We have of late seen occurrences of disasters and emergencies in cities due to informal settlements fueled by overpopulation,” said Kufandiko.
He hopes the project will reduce risks and build community resilience to disasters in the urban areas.
“The interventions will be implemented in Blantyre, Thyolo, Chikwawa and Nsanje.
“We also want to establish a stock prepositioning center where relief items like tents, blankets, Covid 19 kits among others will be stored to support people when disasters strike,” stressed Kufandiko.
The intervention comes when some cities including Blantyre and Lilongwe experienced flooding in the recent past years.
Some months ago, Planning Director at Blantyre City Council, Costly Chanza conceded that urbanization and informal settlements are the source of disasters.
