Man, 20, Jailed 21 Years for Defilement

A 20-year-old man in Mangochi will spend over two decades in jail, for defiling a 14-month-old stepdaughter.

Mangochi Senior Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, convicted and sentenced the man James George, to 21 years imprisonment with hard labor for the offense.

The court through State prosecutor, Sergeant Anthony Mchiswe, heard that George married the mother of the victim in July this year and found her with the baby and were staying together as a family.

“But on September 6, 2021, the wife left the victim asleep and went to draw water at a nearby borehole, and on her way back she was informed by her close relative that her husband was bathing the victim but with blood oozing from her genital,” explained Sergeant Mchiswe.

Prosecutor Mchiswe added; “The mother rushed home and found the victim crying uncontrollably and unattended with a wound in the genital area.”

He said the matter was reported to Police where a referral letter for medical examination was issued and results confirmed defilement.

Appearing in court, George pleaded not guilty to the charge prompting the state to parade four witnesses who testified against him.

In mitigation, he asked for the court's leniency, saying he was taking care of his visually impaired grandmother and would suffer if sent to prison, which prosecutor Mchiswe argued that such cases are on the increase, in the district.

Passing judgment, Senior Resident Magistrate Rodrick Michongwe, concurred with the state, hence handing him a 21-year long sentence to serve as a lesson to other would-be offenders.

James George hails from Namaninga Village Traditional Authority Bwananyambi in the same district.
