The Malawi Police Service says it is within its mandate to enforce all set public laws including the re-introduced COVID-19 preventive rules and regulations.

Last week, Co-Chairperson of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19 Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda made fresh announcement of COVID-19 rules and regulations following a sharp rise in coronavirus cases in Malawi.

She said the taskforce banks its hope on police in enforcement of these guidelines which started on Monday, 20th December, 2021.

National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner James Kadadzera says arresting and prosecuting are last resort but their interest is to see the public adhering to the set rules.

“The rules and regulations are for the public good and some of us have lost close relations, friends and we have seen public figures succumbing to COVID-19. So, we expect the general public to observe the guidelines. However, police will arrest and prosecute those contravening the guidelines,” said Kadadzera.

Meanwhile, Executive Secretary for Malawi Human Rights Commission Habiba Osman says they expects police to be cautious when enforcing the guidelines and not violate the rights of people when enforcing the guidelines.

“Continued sensitization of masses on COVID-19 is paramount in this fight against the disease at the same time people especially those in rural areas should be provided with PPEs, but let me advise the public to be responsible enough by observing COVID-19 preventive measures,” said Osman

Since last week, the country has seen a rise in new COVID-19 cases.
