Children Told to Plant and Care for Trees

Children in the country have been challenged to embrace the culture of planting and caring for trees as a means of transferring wealth and good health to the future generation.

This comes as Thyolo district has lost over 700 hectares of forest cover from 2020 mainly in estates.

Thyolo Thava Parliamentarian, Mary Navitcha, and representative of Thyolo district council Chairperson, Councilor Harrison Ovilla, have told Zodiak today after a District Tree Planting Launch that children should be trained on the importance of planting and caring for trees if the country is to reverse the current trend.

According to Navitcha, training children to embrace the culture of planting and caring for trees is a means of transferring wealth and good health to the future generation.

"We have been planting trees, but it seems we are facing a problem of having the grow. So as a parent I have emphasized on the need for the children to be trained on the importance of planting and caring for trees if the country is to reverse the current trend". Navitcha said.

This came out on the sideline of district tree planting launch which was held at Mtambanyama Primary school.

Meanwhile, Self Help Africa Project Manager, Lasnet Nathan, says they are expected to pump in 25 million kwacha in reafforestation drive in the district to avert the effects of deforestation to the agriculture sector.

This year, Thyolo district is expected to plant over 800, 000 trees to cover over 700 hectares of forest cover which has been lost to deforestation in two years from 2020, mainly in estates.
