Bushiri Eyes Ana Damaged Water Systems

Leader of Enlightened Christian Gathering Church Prophet Shepherd Bushiri has made a commitment to support rehabilitation of water systems that were damaged by Tropical Cyclone Ana last week in the southern part of Malawi.

Prophet Bushiri said this is part of his response to the disaster.

He made the commitment on Thursday after donating food and nonfood items to 2000 disaster affected households in Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje district.

Each household received ten packets of soya pieces, a 25-kilogram bag of maize, one packet of sugar, a plastic bucket and a plastic sheet roll for roofing.

“The magnitude of the Cyclone Ana disaster is quite severe than what we heard and read from the media and just as President Lazarus Chakwera said, we need to use the little we have to support disaster affected households,” said Prophet Bushiri.

He said in the past three days, he together with his wife visited several evacuation camps where displaced people are living a miserable life and they saw heavily damaged houses, crops and properties.

Because of this, we felt though comforting them with a prayer is important, these people need to eat, they need somewhere safe to sleep and above all, they need our help to return to their normal lives, he said.

Senior Chief Nkanda thanked the Bushiris for their support which she said will go a long way in reducing the sufferings the affected households are going through.

“Apart from destroying houses and crops, the stormy rains also damaged water facilities such as water pipes and boreholes and people are now drinking from unprotected water sources,” said the senior chief.

District Commissioner for Mulanje Stallichi Mwambiwa said “we are very hopeful that individuals and organizations of good will, will emulate the gesture displayed by Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and Shepherdess Mary Bushiri.”

Mulanje is the third worst hit districts with over 18 000 households affected.
