Chiefs Urged to Refrain from Politics and Corruption
Deputy minister of Local government, Halima Daudi has advised local chiefs in the country to refrain from abusing their powers by indulging in active politics and acts of corruption as they are custodians of people from all political parties.
Daudi said this in Machinga on Friday on the sidelines of an elevation ceremony of group village headman Adamson to a Sub T/A, while Sub T/A Mizinga has been elevated to a T/A and T/A Nsanama into a Senior Chief.
She said, when other chiefs get elevated, they take advantage of the powers by demanding bribes from their charges.
She has however reminded the chiefs to be promoters of peace and culture.
"The Chiefs look after people from different circles of life, so we expect them to be using their powers accordingly. Let them bring peace and development to their people, rather than using that robe to threaten their subordinates," said Daudi.
Paramount Chief Kawinga concurred with Daudi by advising the three chiefs to work according to their given areas hence avoiding chieftaincy boundary wrangles.
District commissioner for Machinga, Rosemary Nawasha believes that three elevated chiefs will help in boosting the district's development.
"As the number of chiefs has increased today, we believe there will be more development in the areas," Nawasha said.
Machinga has a total of 22 chiefs following the elevation of the three leaders.
