Thyolo Youths Mobilizing Resources for School Renovations

Almost a month after Thyolo district education authorities sounded an SOS on the state of some learning infrastructure in the district, owing to strong winds and heavy rains including Cyclone Ana, a local youth-led NGO has partnered with communities in the resource mobilization and renovation drive called Tiyeni Tikonze Project.

Change 4 Us Executive Director, Kondwani Mwendo-Phiri, told Zodiak that Cyclone Ana has exacerbated the problem and right to education is affected in over seven primary schools in the district where construction materials are urgently needed.

Mwendo-Phiri says that the project is mobilizing money, iron sheets, cement, bricks, stationery and sanitation materials, among others.

"We are highly motivated by SDGs 4 which clearly spells out access to quality education for all. We are here to assist those that have been affected by Cyclone Ana including the education system.

“Change begins where you are. So, we live in Thyolo. So, we are trying to create a conducive environment for our learners through renovations and enhanced sanitation," Mwendo said.

Recently, Thyolo District Education Manager, Godfrey Kubwese, told us Glengarry, Januwale, Mpeni, Nantchefu, Namachira, Kalimbuka and Kankhomba have been mostly hit since the onset of rains.

"With inadequate SIG that we give to schools, most schools where the damage is of high magnitude, they will not manage to renovate them. These will need help from other stakeholders," Kubwese said.
