Govt Dared on Sanitation Emergency Plan

Health expert Professor Maureen Chirwa has asked the government to set up an emergency plan that will provide for immediate solution to the sanitation infrastructure damaged by Tropical Storm Ana to avoid cholera outbreak and waterborne diseases in the country.

Professor Chirwa has told Zodiak that since the rains have forced down many sanitation structures such as toilets in the communities, government and stakeholders should ensure that the citizenry has access to temporary structures to avoid cholera outbreak and diarrhea diseases.

"This is an emergency in its itself, the way the rains are pouring, we cannot really predict the extent of damage in full.

"So, government and indeed those who are responsible should quickly come up with the emergency plan that will provide for simple-immediate attention to the sanitation so that we don't end up having another disaster of illness such as, cholera and diarrhea diseases," says Professor Chirwa.

Reports are indicating that the country has suffered a great loss of public and household infrastructure due to heavy rains and Tropical Storm Ana such as toilet facilities.

Meanwhile, DoDMA Spokesperson, Chipiliro Khamula, has told Zodiak today that this has already been incorporated in the Moderate Tropical Storm Ana Response Plan which will be released shortly.

The 2021/2022 National Multi-Hazard Contingency Plan which was coordinated by Department of Disaster and Management Affairs, DoDMA, also predicted that over 5000 people are likely to be affected by cholera, eye and skin infections this year.
